Paolo Uccello, born Paolo di Dono, was an Italian Renaissance painter and mathematician from Florence who was notable for his pioneering work on visual perspective in art. In his book Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, Giorgio Vasari wrote that Uccello was obsessed by his interest in perspective and would stay up all night in his study trying to grasp the exact vanishing point. Uccello used perspective to create a feeling of depth in his paintings. His best known works are the three paintings representing the battle of San Romano, which were wrongly entitled the Battle of Sant'Egidio of 1416 for a long period of time. Paolo worked in the Late Gothic tradition, emphasizing colour and pageantry rather than the classical realism that other artists were pioneering.

Ashmolean Museum
Annunciation is a gold and tempera on panel painting by Paolo Uccello executed c. It is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, to which it was given by William Thomas Herner Fox-Strangways in 1850. An 18th-century label on the reverse links the painting to Pesello and gives it the catalogue number 22.

Crucifixion is a c.1457 to 1458 tempera on panel painting by Paolo Uccello, now in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, in Madrid. Its dating is debated, some date it to the same period in the Cappella dell'Assunta (1435) due to the similarities between the pose of the Virgin Mary in Crucifixion and the woman climbing the stairs in the chapel fresco of The Birth of the Virgin, whilst others date it to a later period after his return to Padua, where he was influenced by the work of Donatello.
