George Washington Parke Custis (April 30, 1781, October 10, 1857) was an American antiquarian, author, and playwright. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. His father John Parke Custis served in the American Revolution with then-General George Washington, and died after the Battle of Yorktown that ended the revolution.

George Washington was an American general of the Continental Army, first president of the United States, from 1789 to 1797, and one of the country's many Founding Fathers. Washington led patriot forces in the American Revolutionary War against the British Empire; Washington and the Continental Army defeated British forces on October 19, 1781. Washington presided over the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, which drafted the Constitution of the United States.

Gilbert Stuart (né Stewart; December 3, 1755, July 9, 1828) was an American painter born in the Rhode Island Colony who is widely considered one of America's foremost portraitists. His best-known work is an unfinished portrait of George Washington, begun in 1796, which is usually referred to as the Athenaeum Portrait. Stuart retained the original and used it to paint scores of copies that were commissioned by patrons in America and abroad.

Benjamin Tappan (May 25, 1773, April 20, 1857) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Ohio and a United States senator from Ohio. Born on May 25, 1773, in Northampton, Province of Massachusetts Bay, British America, Tappan attended the public schools and was apprenticed as a printer and engraver. He traveled to the West Indies and studied painting with Gilbert Stuart.

The Jacobite Army, sometimes referred to as the Highland Army, was the military force assembled by Charles Edward Stuart and his Jacobite supporters during the 1745 Rising that attempted to restore the House of Stuart to the British throne. Starting with less than 1,000 men at Glenfinnan in August 1745, the Jacobite army won a significant victory at Prestonpans in September. A force of about 5,500 then invaded England in November and reached as far south as Derby before successfully retreating into Scotland.
